Quick Start Guide

Prerequisites: A supported Java Enabled Phone or PDA, an inbuilt or external GPS module and internet connectivity on the device. Note: It is possible to run the application in "Simulated GPS Mode"  without a GPS device in order to test the application on your device without investing in a GPS module. Also,  Google-Earth (Version 4+) is needed on the desktop PC in order to edit Vector-Maps and view the GPS-Logs.

Download and install the application: Get the application from the Download Section and install it on your mobile device.

User interface: The application has multiple Screens. Each is assigned  that can be switched by pressing the numeric buttons 1-9. Currently, the assignment of the screens is as follows:

    1. Moving Map - Vector Mode:
    2. Moving Map - Bitmap Mode:
    3. GPS Logger
    4. Time Logger
    5. GPS Information
    6. Keyboard Test
    7. Glide Path Monitor
    8. Density Altitude Calculator and QNH
    0.About Screen

Please note: Depending on the Version,  not all screens might be active.

Menu structure:  The left Menu Button on the phone activates a screen specific Menu whereas the right Button shows a general Menu. By pressing the corresponding menu button again, the menu will be hidden again.

Download demo content:  Switch to the first screen by pressing "1". Then select the context menu by pressing the left menu button on you phone. Choose "Download" to download the demo Vector map with the airports of Switzerland. The demo map is about 50kBytes, if your device is not connected through WLAN or you have a flat-rate data subscription for your phone, your network operator will charge you  for this download. Note: it is also possible to download a map-file through other means to the phone and then import it into the application. This method eliminates any data-transmission cost on the wireless network. After the successful download you should see the map moving in demo mode.

Create a user account: In order to use your own content, you have to create an account. This will enable you to use your custom Vector- and Bitmap-Maps and upload your GPS-Log for viewing with Goolge-Earth. Create an account on the following web page  and enter your user settings in the config screen (right Menu button, by default the account "demo" is used).

Create own Vector-Maps: Vector Maps and Paths can be created and edited in Google-Earth. The demo account uses the a Vector-Map that was created with the following data:

    http://aerotools.hoshis.org/downloads/demo.kmz

Use this data as a base structure to generate your own content.  Once you're done creating the  Vector-Map. Upload it on the Server application using your username password (that you generated before)

    http://aerotools.hoshis.org:8080/InFlightServer/

Once the data is successfully uploaded to the Server. It can be downloaded by the Application to the phone. (Press "1" to enter the first screen, then Download)

Create own Bitmap-Map: In order to create a Bitmap map for the Application a special Desktop application is needed. Unfortunately this Application is not yet ready for release.  If you dare to try an "Alpha-Version" try the following link (you need Java Web Start installed on your PC) - This application generates a suitable file for upload to the Server (same steps as for the Vector-Map).

Alternatively you can download the following .jar file and start it directly on your pc.

    http://aerotools.hoshis.org/downloads/InFlightDesktop.jar

Please remember: This is an early Alpha Version and might not work as you expect.

GPS Log: Activate the GPS Logging by switching to screen 3 by pressing the Numeric Key "3"., activate the context menu with the left menu button and enable logging.  In order to upload the log, make sure that the application is not currently logging, select "Upload Log"  in the context menu of screen 3. (Key "3" then left menu button). Once the log is successfully uploaded, it can be accessed on the following web-page and viewed with Goolge-Earth.

    http://aerotools.hoshis.org:8080/InFlightServer/

Note: During logging it is possible to change to other screens within the application but do not exit the application as logging will not be active in that case.

Other functionality: Will be described later...
